These two theatre groups had their first date in Rotterdam and explored the mystique of the sailor, comparing it to the reality. The “myth” is that sailors arrive in the harbour and go into the town where they get drunk, meet girls and get a tattoo. In reality harbours and ports are now so big and so secure that a sailor does not have the opportunity to leave the harbour area before he sails home.
Both groups wished to explore this myth of freedom, travel and pleasure by developing a performance-based installation together in a club setting.
Eventually they developed two parallel shows which were often shown together on the same night in the same venue, a nightclub.
Wunderbaum’s Beer Tourist satirised the drinking culture of the English football fan abroad (Metro-Boulot-Dodo’s actors coached them on how to swear authentically in English). They returned to Odessa for a longer research period making friends with and interviewing locals to get material for Beer Tourist.
Metro’s own show Night Scene told the story of a woman traveller lost in a strange European city and the things that befall her when she enters a nightclub.
