North SEAS 2009

North Sea knows less political tensions but ecology and de-industrialization hamper the development of its old port cities, commercial interests clash and fishing quotas hurt, migratory flows alter the population and provoke new divisions.

The SEAS commissions from 2008 returned, strengthened by new works. A movable feast of performances, concerts, exhibits, debates and seminars re-examined the cities on its route and probed their heritage and their future prospects, tested their openness and strength of will to engage with the others, to invest, build and absorb. Contentious memories were shaken and reshaped, talents connected and federated around artistic ideas and urban regeneration projects, specific locations explored for their potential to nourish art.

 In Helsingor SEAS examined the potential of a place defining its cultural future; SEAS visited Gothenburg while Sweden held the EU presidency; in Tromsø, SEAS brought contemporary performing arts from the Black SEAS to the far north of Norway; in Skegness, SEAS visited a traditional British sea-side resort experiencing the effects of migration...
