Sfumato was created in 1989 by Bulgarian theatre directors Ivan Dobchev and Margarita Mladenova, right after the fall of the communist regime in Eastern Europe. They defined it as a territory for theatrical research.

Process and long term rehearsals are at the centre of their method and the creative process approaches the poetics of a text or an author through a series of performances.

Theatre Laboratory Sfumato was one of the co-organisers of Black/North SEAS. Read more about their role as organisers.
