SEAS Club in Varna Balchik, featuring Deirdre Melvin.
The club is designed to provide the informal space in which exchange take really take place in a relaxed social atmosphere between the artists, local cultural people and audiences. The club was also the venue for capacity building workshops with local DJ and musicians and a number of young performers got their first chance to play their music to a live audience.
The club’s resident DJ, Deirdre Melvin also charted the SEAS experience with a series of podcasts/postcards involving interviews with the SEAS artists, partners and local audiences. Each night the club was also the venue for NightScene by Metro-Boulot-Dodo and Beer Tourist by Wunderbaum. Deirdre and her colleagues from cultural organisation the hub in London (Andi Studer and Jenny Harris) also kept a personal blog about the experience which can be found below. The club also benefited from the help of Dogus Bitecik, the DJ and sound designer for Monday in the Sun, who despite a busy production schedule nevertheless played a regular set. Metro-Boulot-Dodo’s DJ Steve Gibbs also appeared on a regular basis.
In Odessa the key partner was the Exit Club. In Varna the club provided the Varna Summer Festival’s festival club and in Mangalia it moved in to the empty White House on the beach front (which was still being built at the time!) In Gothenburg the club was developed and presented in collaboration with the Sisters, a female DJ collective; in Tromso with local youth organisation Tvibit; and in Skegness with community music organisation SoundLincs.
