Underneath/Nothing as silent as snow

A mixed media performance installation using digital imaging and live action exploring the convoluted journey to becoming a “European” and what lies underneath this apparent homogeneous identity.

At the entrance the audiences’ “papers” were examined, their finger prints taken and other personal details as if they were at the Passport Control. The audience moved through a labyrinth and discovered a central room in which the actors involved them in a series of actions using dialogue, song and mime.  The performance lasted about 20-30 minutes and was repeated three or four times a day.

Director Karena Johnson used local actors in each of the Black Sea venues the show as presented – with a tight schedule, new performers, new spaces, the rehearsal period and preparations were always challenging.  The maze itself (designed by Melih Gorgun) was re-configured in each new venue. You can hear her talking about the challenges of the production on the SEAS Podcast from Mangalia.
