Presenting a project like SEAS in unfamiliar places presents huge challenges technically. SEAS consisted of projects as diverse as sound, video, sculpture installations, theatre, dance, multimedia, musical theatre performances and a club – most taking place in unconventional, public and urban spaces, both outdoors and indoors. A couple of the performances were acted out in a distributed space, such as several rooms in a building.
The international tech team was put together by the coorganizers who “sponsored” one of the technicians to develop their skills. The idea of the Tech Team came from Intercult’s experience on SEAS Adriatic/Baltic 2004-2005 as during that project it was clear that one of the weaknesses of touring international contemporary work was that there were few or no local technicians available with the skills to present it.
Two internal training/preparation workshops were held with the team members in Stockholm in 2008 and in Gothenburg 2009. The Technical Team moved with the project on the tour supplementing both the technical resources of the companies and enhancing the capacities of the host. In some of the cities and towns SEAS travelled to the tech team also contributed to building the professional capacity of local technicians as well.
In 2008 Claes Nordling was technical director with a team of five technicians. A training workshop took place in Stockholm in April 2008. Borut Cajnko assumed the role of technical director in January 2009 and recruited three new members of the team. A second workshop took place at Gothenburg SEAS.
